Amoroso Alessandro mario


Ph.D. fellow in Human Rights and Global Politics at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. His research project focuses on the international law applicable to State - armed group partnerships in warfare.

Alessandro has been a Legal Adviser with the International Committee of the Red Cross at the Paris regional delegation, covering Europe. Before joining the ICRC, he was a Programme Officer with the Security and Law Programme at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

He has published in the Journal of International Criminal Justice, the International Review of the Red Cross, the Geneva Academy War Report, and the Italian Yearbook of International Law. His main interests are international humanitarian law, human rights, international criminal law, and international law on the use of force.

Alessandro holds an LL.M. cum laude from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and a Laurea Magistrale in Giurisprudenza summa cum laude from the University of Naples Federico II. He speaks Italian, English, French and Spanish.

Alessandro's doctoral research focuses on State - armed group partnerships in warfare. The aim of his PhD project is to clarify which international law obligations apply to States supporting non-State armed groups in warfare, weighing international humanitarian law and human rights law rules against the general principles of international law concerning State sovereignty. 

He is currently a member of two reseach teams at Scuola Sant'Anna: the PRIN research project "International legal obligations related to prevention, preparedness, response and recovery from CBRN events" and the project "Promoting Community Stabilization in South Darfur State".
