NEUROSCIENCE ROBOTICS

Neuroscience Robotics is an emerging discipline that investigates the interaction between artificial devices and neural systems and the possibility to implement neural dynamics in artificial devices. Our research is directed at achieving a greater understanding of how the biological brain works and processes information, in order to develop better brain-machine interfaces, to emulate it in silico and to develop brain-like intelligence in robots. One of the key applications is to develop neurotechnologies able to restore healthy functionality through neurostimulations, such as sensorimotor functions in people affected by different types of disability or motor controls in people affected by motor disorders. Key investigations include neural networks and robot learning techniques.

The research finds application in medical devices and cognitive robotics, as well as robots for assistive rehabilitation, collaborative robots, recording of neural activities, devices that interact with humans at cognitive and physical levels, neural interfaces, neuroprosthetic technologies to restore locomotion and grasping sensory-motor functions, advanced computational algorithms, novel approaches to understand motor control. Moreover, investigators address brain-related health challenges such as stroke, hearing disorder, traumatic brain injury and dementia.
